As of October 17, 2026. This week assistants began doing work inside banking, HR and shopping tools with a person approving each step, and Google and Meta each shipped a major model.

Google makes Gemini 4 Argon available worldwide
On October 13, Google launched Gemini 4 Argon. It is available through the Gemini API in AI Studio and the Gemini platform, in Google Antigravity for Ultra subscribers, and in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search for Ultra and Pro subscribers. Google says it is built for hard multi-step work in coding, finance, legal, cybersecurity and science, with a 1 million token limit on the API. Google published its introductory pricing, and the source link has the details.
For a small business: if you already pay for a Google plan, you can test it on a task you know well, like summarizing a long vendor contract, and check the answer yourself. Nothing here requires a change this week.
Meta releases Muse Spark Open, an open-weight model that can run on two Mac Studios
On October 15, Meta released the weights for Muse Spark Open. Meta calls it the most capable open-weight model from a US lab. It is built for coding and multi-step agent work, takes text, images, video and audio, and has a 1 million token context window. Meta says it is the first in its class to run on a desktop setup of two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios, and hosted providers such as OpenRouter, Together AI, Groq and Fireworks AI also offer it. It is released under the Muse Model License, which Meta says has limited commercial terms that let many developers use it for free.
For a small business: open weights are what make private AI possible, where client files stay on hardware you control. Read the license before building anything on it, and treat this as something to evaluate, not to rush into.
Mercury lets ChatGPT and Claude request payments, with your approval
On October 15, Mercury announced that people can ask ChatGPT or Claude to move money, pay a recipient, or categorize transactions on their Mercury account. Mercury says answers are based on the account’s actual data and nothing moves until the account holder approves it. People who already connected Mercury to one of these assistants need to reconnect once to turn on the new actions.
For a small business: categorizing transactions is a good fit for an assistant. Payments are different: keep the approval step in the hands of someone who checks the recipient and amount every time, especially given how convincing fake payment requests have become.
OpenAI sets January 2027 shutdown for GPT-4o and GPT-4.1 on the API
On October 14, OpenAI notified developers that several GPT-4 series models will be removed from the API on January 14, 2027, according to its deprecations page. The list includes the GPT-4o snapshots gpt-4o-2024-08-06 and gpt-4o-2024-11-20, GPT-4o mini, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini. Fine-tuned versions follow the same date. OpenAI recommends gpt-6-luna as the replacement for each.
For a small business: this only matters if a tool, form or automation you use calls one of those models through the API. Ask whoever built it, or the vendor, which model it uses and who will switch it before the date.
Workday and Anthropic connect Sana agents with Claude for HR and finance
On October 13 at Workday Rising 2026, Workday and Anthropic announced a partnership linking Claude with Workday’s Sana AI agents for HR and finance work. A task can start in Sana or Claude and continue in the other, with information exchanged through the Model Context Protocol. Workday says every action follows the customer’s existing permissions and audit controls, and the user confirms every change. Sana in Claude is for early access customers, with general availability expected in late 2026.
For a small business: this is aimed at larger Workday customers. The useful part is the pattern: an assistant works inside the permissions you already have, and a person confirms each change.
Shopify’s new Shop skill turns AI assistants into shoppers
On October 13, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke introduced a Shop skill that connects an AI assistant to a person’s Shop account. According to the page, the assistant can run personalized product searches, check out in one click with Shop Pay, and track orders in the Shop app. The page offers ways to add it to ChatGPT and Claude.
For a small business: if you sell online, more customers may start their search with an assistant. Make sure your product pages, hours and shipping details are clear and current. We wrote about a related situation in when a customer’s AI agent calls your shop.
What this means for a New Hampshire shop
The common thread is that assistants now take actions in the tools you already use, and the better products stop for approval. That fits how we build things: the agent drafts, looks up and pre-fills, and a person approves anything involving money or commitments. If you want help setting that up for one recurring job, look at our custom AI agents work.
The practical to-do this week is small. Find out whether any software you rely on uses the GPT-4o or GPT-4.1 models going away in January, and write down who approves payments in any tool that now offers an assistant. For a rule your staff can follow, see What Not to Paste Into ChatGPT: A One-Page AI Policy.
