High-Performance Mobile Telemetry Data Processing System

This project delivered a high-performance data processing system capable of handling 200 million rows of mobile telemetry data daily, enabling real-time analytics with geolocation functions and dynamic reporting. By leveraging a robust stack of distributed technologies—MinIO, Trino, and ClickHouse—the system ensures scalable ingestion, storage, and querying, providing a reliable, low-latency platform for actionable insights through advanced geolocation-based analytics. We worked with Quantrail Data as they have extensive experience with ClickHouse.

System Architecture

Data Ingestion and Storage

  • MinIO: Deployed as a high-performance object storage solution to manage the massive influx of telemetry data.
    • Optimized for high throughput and fault tolerance.
    • Scalable architecture ensures efficient data ingestion and retrieval.

Query Processing

  • Trino: Integrated as the distributed SQL query engine for low-latency federated queries.
    • Supports complex geolocation functions, enabling real-time spatial analysis (e.g., proximity calculations, geospatial aggregations).
    • Optimized query execution plans to meet performance demands.

Analytical Workloads

  • ClickHouse: Utilized for its columnar storage and exceptional performance in analytical tasks.
    • Powers real-time report generation.
    • Fine-tuned with indexing strategies and resource allocation for high throughput.

Implementation Details

  • Performance Optimization:

    • Meticulous tuning of resource allocation, query execution plans, and indexing strategies to handle 200 million rows daily with sub-second query response times.
    • System rigorously tested under simulated loads to validate scalability and performance.
  • Administration and Maintenance:

    • Automated monitoring, backup, and recovery processes ensure data integrity and system uptime.
    • Containerized deployments with orchestration tools streamline cluster installations for consistency across environments.
  • Security:

    • Robust access controls and encryption safeguard sensitive telemetry data.
